Straight after heavy rainfall, some children decided to investigate a range of objects and whether they would sink or float when placed in the water pool that had formed on top of the sand pit cover. The children predicted what would happen and then tested a range of objects, including stones, bark, pine cones and then plastic discs. The children thought critically as they decided to test 2 and more discs piled on top of each other. They discovered that 1 disc on it’s own and 2 discs in a stack, still floated but when 3 or more discs were stacked up they sunk. There was lots of super vocabulary use including, ‘heavier,’ ‘lighter’ and one of our Shining Stars explained that: “If there was more water in the pool, 3 discs might even float!” Another investigation ready to begin!
