In spring 2021, Barnsley Council and Fusion (Barnsley’s Cultural Education Partnership) offered schools the chance to be part of a unique competition with a once in a lifetime prize of having their artwork immortalised in Barnsley town centre.

The competition was open to all Year 5 children living in Barnsley, with pupils set the challenge of creating artwork of their keyworker heroes.  Over a third of all primary schools in Barnsley took part, with pupils submitting a range of keyworkers – bus drivers, delivery people, shop workers, postal workers, refuse collectors, nurses, paramedics and, of course, teachers!

The winning entries have been made into a bronze relief in the plinth of the sculpture, for future generations to see in Glassworks Square, in Barnsley. The competition has offered schools a brilliant opportunity to really shout about how talented their youngsters are at a time when many pupils have missed the opportunity to showcase their work.

We have a winner in our school and the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Caroline Makinson, is coming  toTankersley St. Peter’s school to present Georgia Ashton with her prize medal and certificates for other superb entries.
